Dear Zane, My Name Is _______________________And Im Fifteen Years Old. I Was Born And Raised In The South Side Of Chicago. I Live With My Mama And My Brothers And Sisters. Im The Oldest Of Seven Kids. My Dad Has Been In Jail My Whole Life So I Dont Know Him. Its Really Not Safe Here In Chi Town Because All The Young People And Kids Are Getting Shot Up Left And Right And Dying. We Cant Be Outside And My Brothers And Sisters Have To Play in The Closet Because We Are Scared To Get Shot And Killed. Some Of My Cousins Died And Some Of My Friends Brothers Got Shot. Its Like A War Zone And We Begged Our Mama To Move Because We Dont Wanna Die With Bullets. I Have Nightmares At Night And I Dont Like The Popos. They Dont Help Us They Help Kill Us. My Mama Told Us That We Are Moving To Miami, Florida Next Month. I Dont Know If Its Safe Over There. She Said That It Is But I Dont Think So. I Dont Wanna Move To That State. Zimmerman Lives There. My Mama Said That We Dont Have To Worry But Im Worried. I Dont Wanna Shot And I Dont Want My Little Brothers And Sisters To Die Either. We Wanna Live And Grow Up. Kids Shouldnt Die Before Their Parents. I Cant Focus At School Because Most Of The Time Im Thinking About If My Brothers And Sisters Are Still Alive Because I Dont Know If They Got Shot Or Not. I Do Want Us To Move Somewhere Safe. I Think That Its Safe In Canada. My Friend Moved There To Live With Her Auntie And She Told Me That Its Very Safe And No Shootings And The People Are Very Nice. But My Mama Dont Wanna Move To Canada. I Dont Know Anybody In Florida But I Know That Zimmerman Lives There And He Kills Kids And I Dont Wanna Live In That State Or Chicago. Can You Be Kind Enough To Ask People Who Live In Miami How Safe Is It There??? MY RESPONSE: This simply breaks my heart, to see so many young people so scared to even life their lives. Baby Girl, I am sure that your mother is only trying to do what is best for you and your siblings. She may not be able to move to Canada. It is not as simple as deciding to move to another country but your friend already had family there. The truth of the matter is that nowhere is completely safe but none of us can live in fear. I know that is easier said than done because of everything that you have seen and all that you go through but please know that your mother is doing the best she can and please reserve your judgement about where you are moving to until you get there. Please let me know when you get there and get settled in. I love you and I am going to keep you in my prayers.
