Dear colleagues, We are pleased to present an international initiative aiming at promoting the revival of the Mount Athos legacy in Ukraine and ongoing research on historical and religious contacts between the Holy Mountain and Ukrainian lands. We would like to invite you to take part in the international conference “Rus’ and Mount Athos: a Millennium of Spiritual and Cultural Ties”, which will take place in November 2014, in Chernihiv (Ukraine), birthplace of St. Anthony of the Caves, father of ascetic monasticism in the principalities of the Kievan Rus’. This first meeting is organised by The International Institute of the Athonite Legacy in Ukraine, a research public organisation, whose objective is the revival of the Athonite legacy. The main purpose of the Institute lies in the collection of surviving documents from Ukrainian and foreign archives shedding light on the history of contacts between the territories actually within the borders of Ukraine with Mount Athos. Material testimonies of such contacts (monuments; icons and so forth) will also be catalogued in order to offer the scientific community a modern and efficient research instrument and new information. As 2016 draws near, the 1000th anniversary of ties of the Ancient Rus’ monasticism with Mount Athos will be widely celebrated in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, as well as on the Holy Mountain itself. We endeavor to propose a series of international meetings of different formats (conferences, seminars, workshops, round tables) dedicated to in-depth study of spiritual, cultural and historical contacts between Kievan Rus’/ Ukraine/Russia and the Holy Mountain.
