Dear conservatives that dont understand the nature of poverty, Youre right. I have a laptop. I bought it almost three years ago and use it in an entrepreneurial fashion to feed my family, thanks to conservative fiscal mismanagement and double-digit unemployment in my area. I also have a microwave, yep. I use it to heat up Ramen during the last week of the month when were out of actual food. You know what I DONT have? The ability to go to the dentist and get my cavities fixed, which are linked to heart disease and other long-term ill health effects (which will cost me money in the long run: another reason poverty is expensive). I cant go to the doctor. If I need to get emergency care, Ill probably end up declaring bankruptcy. I cant go to college. I cant move out of this area to pursue opportunity elsewhere. And its NOT just me -- its millions of us. So heres the deal. You can keep talking about how our air conditioning (which we dont use often; too expensive to run) or microwaves make us less poor. Meanwhile, were looking at your idols, dripping excess to a nearly unfathomable degree -- and wondering how long it will take of us begging for help before we have to start taking. Do you know how many meals a single flight of a Gulfstream 5 would pay for? Well, it burns $2,100 worth of fuel per hour, which would feed a family of four on a moderate food budget for two months. Think about that. Think about the logistics of need. (FDA stats combined with Slate research on the cost to maintain a G550) Income inequality ALWAYS fixes itself. The question is how -- democratically, peacefully, or with social (or violent) revolution against the robber barons. Which is it going to be?
