Dear fellow Madison cyclists who werent biking all winter: I - TopicsExpress

Dear fellow Madison cyclists who werent biking all winter: I biked today for the first time since November, about 24 miles today to McFarland and back through the east side. Theres a lot of water on paths here and there due to drainage difficulties from snow and ice along the sides and frozen ground. Youre gonna get a stripe or wet shoes, but dont let that stop you! If it freezes, though, there may be little skating rinks here and there and everywhere. And dont ride into water of unknown depth or of unknown pavement quality beneath. Some transition spots and curb cuts have ice or slush or large amounts of sand. Other streets of note: * The Cottage Grove Road westbound bike lane is full of gravelly sand from the Capital City Trail to Culvers. * East Mifflin Street Bike Boulevard: big nasty pothole eastbound in the middle of the 1200 block (the block with all the speed bumps), right in the bike travel area. Ive reported to the city just tonight, in case they can do any sort of patch on it. * East Mifflin Street far eastern end parking lot: Many of us cut through there to get to the Yahara Bike Path, but the snow removal for the lot piled all the snow at the far end--you cant get through without climbing over 6 feet of snow! So when you get to Dickinson on Mifflin eastbound, turn left and go up the hill one block and then turn right down Dayton to access the Yahara path. * Marsh Road between Madison and McFarland, in the narrow (no bike lane) section: really bad asphalt patch job northbound, and lots of water in both directions, and cars coming the OTHER way are unable to avoid splashing you due to the narrow road and water depth. * Marsh Road/Agriculture Road curve, northbound: lots of glass in the bike line/shoulder area. (We got an idea why this keeps happening which I mean to follow up on this year.)
