Dear friends provide us with serious food for thought. Let us know your thoughts on this sometimes touchy subject. Our appropriation of other cultures symbols and traditions has come up from time to time. Tonight, for example, we plan to have a great artist paint sugar skulls on our faces to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. In American culture, there is a well celebrated holiday that shares midnight with a stronger and more meaningful holiday. We choose sugar skulls over buckets of sugar. Another example of our appropriation is that we often use a winged sun disc in our art. We play reggae, we reference Native American issues in our lyrics... It is true that we are only connected to the cultures of origin in these examples secondhand. We believe that underlying individual cultural traditions is a yet-to-be-celebrated One World tradition. Our intention is to gently and respectfully shed light on symbols and traditions that inspire and empower us. Some of the traditions and symbols that the members of our band were raised by have proven to be only a shadow of truth. Some of them even cast a shadow over truth. We strive to represent the truths that resonate with us from the cultures of the world to which we have been exposed. Any thoughts or feelings from the peanut gallery on this?
