Dear members, the ESAs next Policy in the Pub event will be held on Wednesday 17 September at 5.30 pm at the Elephant and the Wheelbarrow at 94-96 Bourke street in the city. Dr Graeme Woodbridge, Specialist Economic Advisor to the ACCC will talk on the Misuse of Market Power in Australia. With the Harper Review into Competition Policy underway there is a debate on whether the Australian Competition laws are adequate to deal with the misuse of market power in the Australian economy. Concerns are expressed that some major corporates wield too much power in dealing with competitors and suppliers. What is an effects test and is it needed in Australia? Some major corporations are concerned introducing an effects test will limit their ability to compete. Graeme will step through these issues in what will be a very lively discussion.
