Dear mrs Shepherd ([email protected]), Would you please be so kind to think and investigate before you say anything about local traditions you have the slightest idea of? For hundreds of years (starting in 1427) the Sinterklaas festivities have been to great joy of children in the Netherlands and Belgium. How dare you link this to slavery? How dare you use something so unique to our culture for your own career? Do you know that the tradition of Santa Claus in the US was ‘imported’ by Dutch immigrants? Do you see similarity between both names? Do you know that US didn’t exist yet in 1427? If you are asked for an opinion start with an investigation before you say anything. It is completely outrageous that with the responsibility / the function you have within UN, that you can tell such stupidities. Please refrain from any commentary via TV, radio or whatsoever until you know what you are talking about. I advise you strongly not to come to the Netherlands for your investigation because I think there will be millions of mothers and fathers who are very willing to give you the warmest welcome ever. Let go of your tunnel vision, start thinking like you probably once did (you are a professor after all) and apologize to the Dutch people!
