Dear parents: Im very sorry that you wont be dropping your kids - TopicsExpress

Dear parents: Im very sorry that you wont be dropping your kids off to their fist day of school today. Im sorry that you feel as though teachers are using your children as pons in this horrific and frustrating chess game. Having taught for many years across many grades and two provinces, I can assure you that the teachers with political agendas who are just out to stick it the government are few and far between. The vast majority of teachers are fighting for your children. They are fighting for your childrens right to an education that will prepare them for life, wherever that may take them. Whether they have special needs, are gifted or fall somewhere in between, teachers are fighting for the right of EVERY child to receive the attention they deserve. Having taught in a class where there were students with serious behaviour and learning disabilities, I can tell you first hand that in that situation, the average student does not get a good education. How can a teacher possibly inspire and encourage their students to meet their potential when they have to focus on those who cant get through a lesson? The system is broken, and it has been for a while. Lay your blame where you will, but to say that teachers should just settle up and get back to work means that you dont care about the education of your children. If you are ok with your child being in a classroom where the teachers attention is divided between 28 students, of which at least 7 have special needs that are not receiving support, then by all means, continue to side with the government. But, when it comes time for parent teacher interviews and you are dissatisfied with the attention that your child receives, you have lost your right to complain. This is not about money in our pocket. Guaranteed: if you ask most teachers, a wage increase is not what they are seeking (nice yes, but if was a choice between a wage increase and classroom composition, we would chose composition, AGAIN). 12 years ago we chose NO WAGE INCREASE so that we could have appropriate classroom composition. The government has been ignoring this contract for 12 years, despite two supreme court rulings that these actions were illegal. So, parents, if you want teachers to hurry back to work, at the expense of your children, fine. Personally, I think they should hold the line as long as it takes because I want my children to receive the finest education possible. Sorry for the rant.
