Death By: Emily Dickinson Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immorality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste, And I had put away My labour, and my leisure too, For his civility. Or rather, he passed us; The dews grew quivering and chill, For only gossamer my gown, My tippet only tulle. We passed before a house that seemed A swelling of the ground; The roof was scarcely visible, The cornice but a mound. Since then tis centuries, and yet each Feels shorter than the day I first surmise the horsess heads Were toward eternity. Definitions: Immortality: unending life Leisure: free time Strove: try hard Surmise: to guess Tippet: a scarf Haste: speed, to go fast Civility: to be polite Cornice: decorative molding Gossamer: webbing on grass Tulle: a thin material like silk Question: The poem has a few literary/poetic devices. Identify two different types of literary devices (so you cannot find two metaphors, you cannot find 2 examples of personification, etc) Explain your examples. Answer a, b a) In the first stanza the 1st and 2nd lines are personification because death is not a living human being so death cannot stop or stop kindly for you because it cannot feel emotion. b) I believe the entire poem is a metaphor for someone who was going so fast in life and is stopped by death. Death interrupted them and all they were around and were seeing. Their life is flashing before their eyes. So, you can run from death, but it will catch up to you at an appointed time. Question: 2.
