Decades from now, during my interview in the final segment of the 6-hour PBS retrospective of my life as a prolific writer, my interviewer will ultimately ask how I came to realize that I desired this as a profession. My reply will immediately be “The Gunslinger.” Such a small, humongous, deliberate work. The whole story is basically- and unapologetically- a foreward to an infinitely larger story, but still a satisfying, contained read. Just like the eponymous main character, the narrative travels relentlessly and deliberately and constantly (“plodding” is the word the book itself uses more than once) in a straight line. Although, by the end of it you turn back and realize that line had a slight, undetectable curve in one direction. I’m not the biggest Steven King fan in the world, but one must admit the man is relentless and just trust-falls into his own Id with a grin. Sorry to ramble, but I really enjoyed it.
