Deccan Queen (A train which shuttles daily to and fro Pune-Mumbai) was the address written by Prof. D.D. Kosambi to the preface when he completed his first work on Ancient Indian History and Culture - An Introduction to the Study of Indian History (1956). Though as per own admission of Prof. Kosambi, his venture in Indology was like fallen into Indology, as it were, through the roof ! and it is after his forays in Indology that he started to take keen research interest in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Society. Prof. Kosambi during his tenure in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay as Professor of Mathematics (1945 - 1962) used to daily commute from Pune to Mumbai. He used to walk per day around 4 Km from his house to reach Pune Railway Station with his bag loaded with books. Deccan Queen virtually became his workplace where he did most of his scholarly works. The impact of An Outline can be said in a better way by referring Prof. Irfan Habib who recalls that within five of its publication, An Outline became the mandatory reading for students and teachers of History all over the world !
