(December 16, 2010) "...Patrick Donovan, with the Rahall Transportation Institute, has been researching and studying the Appalachian Development Highway System and told the group that since the ADHS began, the U.S. has moved away from a national economy and toward an ever-growing global economy. A completed Corridor H would mean shipments could be taken to an inland port at Front Royal, Virginia. At the inland port, the containers of products could be transported by rail to Norfolk, Virginia, to reach 130 markets around the world. This method of moving products has been increasing exponentially since 1970, when around 1 million containers were exported. By 2000, 20 million containers were shipped to foreign countries; and by 2050, an estimated 100 million containers will be exported, Donovan said. He added that exporting jobs pay higher wages than domestic market jobs. Expansion of the Panama Canal will finish in 2014, which will enable Asian markets to access the eastern seaboard, Donovan said. He explained Norfolk will be the ideal port because of ease of access and the deepest channels on the East Coast. Foster said he recently traveled to Italy to bring industry to the area and concerns among possible foreign investors is being able to compete by cost effectively shipping products back to Europe..."
