December 21, 2014 (Fourth Sunday in Advent) Text: Luke 1:39-56 Mary’s Song Mary Spear Luke 1:39-56 verse 39: “In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country.” Today, I light the fourth candle on the Advent wreath that sits on our dining room table. Make haste. I’m invited to a friend’s Christmas party. Make haste. My husband (and he alone!) likes my homemade fruitcake for Christmas. Make haste. I need some Christmas wrapping paper. Make haste. These last few days of Advent are crunch time and I along with others are in a big hurry to get things done. My being in a hurry seems to imply a busyness I bring on myself. And these things that occupy my time are not usually earth-shattering activities that will bring about the end of the world if they do not get done. Mary made a quick departure to see Elizabeth and share her good news but it doesn’t seem right to say that she was in a big hurry like I’m in a big hurry. She had something going on more important than fruitcake and wrapping paper. Today, I want to be in a hurry to do the right things, the things that matter. I will read Mary’s glorious song of praise, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-56). I will praise God. Make haste.
