December 25th. Todays reading is 1 John chapters 1 through 5. Topics covered in chapter 1 include: He describes the person of Christ. In chapter 2: Christ our advocate and propitiation. In chapter 3: Of Gods love towards us. In chapter 4: We must not believe all teachers. In chapter 5: Of keeping Gods commandments. Amen. John omits his name so that we are swayed by the things written and not the name of the writer, as in Hebrews. He declares the truth and dignity of the Author of the gospel by speaking of His character, that He is the Word of life, as He is eternal life. He is perfect in every way with no flaws, therefore if we say we worship Him and dont walk in His ways we lie and denial of our sin is not only a lie to ourselves but a dishonor to God. He talks of the old and new commandment of holy love and directs it to the several ranks of disciples ranging from babes to seasoned disciples, encouraging obedience and contempt of the world. The honor of believers is above the understanding of the world. He gives many arguments against sin and discusses the connection between regeneration and the relinquishment of sin, showing our hearts and consciences to be those that act in Gods name in judicial power. He gives tests by which disciples could try pretending spirits that would seduce Christians away from God, namely to be tried by their doctrine, to see if it matches what God says. He recommends sacred love by many considerations such as the source of love, which is God Himself. He explains how we can discern the true nature of our love to the regenerate, that it is genuine and not born of an admiration of their riches or education or kindness to us, but because they are Gods children. He gives celestial evidence concerning the divine mission, authority, and office of Christ by listing His credentials by how He came and the witnesses that attend Him. The heavenly witnesses and the earthly ones. He gives direction for prayer according to different sorts of sins distinguished and reminds us that believers are fortified against Satans attempts. He ends with an exhortation against idols. Since we know the true God and are in Him, we should guard against all opposition or competition against Him. Have a blessed day.
