December 31st, New Years Eve, at Pratt Institute. I will be there. This will be the very last year that this only in NY annual event will take place as Pratt is closing it down in the future. Chief Engineer Conrad Milster collects steam whistles, which he hooks to Pratt’s steam system for a New Year’s “concert.” One of his “concerts” is a great way to begin the New Year!I would recommend arriving a bit early simply because the crowds can get pretty large. This is a popular event! I suggest not later than 11:00PM Pratt Institute, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn boasts the oldest continuously-operating, privately-owned, steam-powered electrical generating plant in the country. In the East Building you can see the steam turbines along with a collection of other Brooklyn memorabilia and talk with Conrad Milster, Chief Engineer and steam aficionado. You can learn not only about steam-generated electricity but also about all sorts of steam-powered vehicles from mini-trains to giant ocean liners. If youre around on New Years Eve or Pratt Graduation, you can hear the great whistle blasts from Conrads collection of steam whistles. Pulling the lever on the whistle from the U.S.S. Normandy and being enveloped in steam is an experience not to be missed. You can try out railroad locomotive whistles, lake and riverboat whistles in addition to the blasts from major ocean liners. Here’s a website that also includes the address and a map of the area: Here’s a great set of images of Pratt’s electric plant: Here are some photographs and videos: There will be two gates open, one on the corner of Dekalb and Hall Street; the other is the main vehicle gate on Grand and Willoughby Aves. Grand Ave does probably not show on maps because there are super blocks on each side of Willoughby. Once on the campus head for the smokestack or follow the noise to the calliope. Closest subway stop is Washington\Clinton on the G train. Get out at the Washington end of the station. One block along Lafayette , turn left around the church. One block down Hall Street you will see Pratt Meet me there if you wish. We might have a few drinks after. (If you know me you have my #).
