December 4: Saying goodbye is often a difficult thing to do. When visiting children and grandchildren leave to go back to their home after the holidays it tugs at the heart strings. When a career change creates a need to move, saying farewell to neighbors and our old homes can be sad. Whether it is for a short time or possibly for good, parting with those close to you leaves an empty space. December 4, 1783, two years after accepting the surrender of the British Army, ending the fighting of the Revolutionary War, General George Washington called his officers to New York to inform them he was resigning his commission. Witnesses said the room was filled with emotion. After all, many of these men had fought, and had seen many die in the process, for the independence of the United States. Now, their leader in that effort was telling them good bye. They loved their leader. At times, many of them may have found themselves fighting for him more than for this idea of a united country for it was he they actually could see. Washington’s retirement lasted just six years when he was asked to lead again, as the country’s first President. Our leader, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ gathered His officers and told them goodbye before departing this earth. His goodbye was not forever. He will return as well and take believers with Him. Don’t get caught waiting. Anticipate the return. Rejoice in its coming. “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.” (Mark 13: 32-33)
