December 8, 2012 6:08 pm 6:08pm CASE BUILDING TIPS FOR ASYLUM SEEKING INTRODUCTION: You are gay and you are in Uganda. You want to leave Uganda and as a gay person want to go to one of the 11 countries in mind (generated from frequently asked questions during my counselling sessions): Germany, Netherlands, South-Africa, Kenya, UK, Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Spain and USA. THE CASE: You have a case, similar to these three cases I am already handling: Case 1: A mother of a gay son outed by Red Pepper Case 2: A transgender-boy in a loving relation, feeling insecure Case 3: A gay son, whose father threatened to kill him than be ashamed THE PLAUSIBLE CASE: Legally one has to have a story that is realistic in form of recorded threats, bodily harm, abuses, rejection, eviction, abandonment, collaboration, newspaper prints of a similar story and an incidence that is presentable in courts of law. THE LOGISTICS: 1. One has to have a passport 2. One has to have a ticket to those countries in case these are not available 3. One has to have contacted UNHCR or Human Rights Defenders’ Organisation and made their case 4. One contacts a lawyer in a country of destination ready to take on the case (or get in touch with NGO’s fighting for asylum seekers so that one is not held by customs at the airport). 5. Get a person ready to host you ( a very important point) THE HOST COUNTRY: A country in which people are escaping: 1. People willing to write a letter to their embassy saying they will host an LGBTI-Asylee seeker from Uganda 2. Be in position to pick that person from airport 3. Be in position to provide room/space to live 4. Provide opportunities for the asylee to seek asylum seeking avenues in the host country 5. Be ready to escort the guest to places which may be new as they process asylum. INDIVIDUAL CONDUCT-(LAST WORD): You will have left a familiar home and friends. Be on your best behaviour and always be patient. Sometimes you may think you are abandoned. Do not despair. The wheels of integration do take long to spin. Just join the new community and assimilate
