December Events Berklee Performance Center Featured Shows Mark OConnor and Friends: An Appalachian Christmas Friday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. Grammy-winning violinist Mark OConnor will usher in the holiday season this December with his third annual An Appalachian Christmas tour, performing elegant (New York Times) interpretations of Christmas classics found on his celebrated album of the same name, which American Songwriter called an absolute delight. Joining OConnor on stage will be several accomplished instrumentalists and singers including Cia Cherryholmes from the bluegrass band Cherryholmes, fiddler and vocalist Carrie Rodriguez, guitarist Joe Smart, bassist Michael Rinne, and OConnors son Forrest on mandolin and vocals. OConnors An Appalachian Christmas reached the top 20 on three Billboard charts (Bluegrass Albums, Crossover Albums, and Classical Albums). The album features guest appearances by Alison Krauss, Renee Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, and more on a variety of beloved holiday staples. Watch Carol of the Bells: bit.ly/1twqRCj Singers Showcase: A Tribute To Muscle Shoals Thursday, December 11 at 8:00 p.m. Many great songs in music history have been recorded in this small town in Alabama by such legendary performers as: Etta James, Percy Sledge, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, The Rolling Stones, Carrie Underwood, Wilson Pickett, Willie Nelson, and many others. Singers Showcase features some of Berklees finest student vocalists, instrumentalists, and arrangers. December Shows Vocal Jazz Festival, Day 2 Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. This concert will feature special guests Peter Eldridge, Alison Wedding, and Patrice Williamson. Vocal Jazz Ensembles perform music in the styles of such groups as The Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Take 6, The Real Group, The Andrew Sisters, The Swingle Singers as well as original arrangements. Vulnerable: A Marvin Gaye Tribute Thursday, December 4 at 8:00 p.m. In homage of this landmark recording and Gaye’s artistic contributions, Revive Music Group, in collaboration with Berklee, will present the first live performance of Vulnerable in its entirety, alongside his popular and lesser-known compositions. Performers include special guests Aloe Blacc, who cowrote and sang on Avici’s “Wake Me Up,” which charted at No. 1 in more than 100 countries, and whose current album, Lift Your Spirit, includes the Top 10 hit “I’m the Man”; Miguel Atwood Ferguson, a musician, composer, and arranger who appears on more than 300 recordings by artists including Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, and Flying Lotus; the Berklee Neo-Soul Ensemble directed by Skip Smith; and the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. Brad Mehldau Trio Saturday, December 13 at 8:00 p.m. Acclaimed jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, a four-time Grammy nominee, and his group present Mehldaus music, which often juxtaposes dense pieces with stripped down, emotionally direct works. Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra Fall Concert Monday, December 15 at 8:00 p.m. Each semester, the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra presents a concert of original student compositions and jazz composition masterworks. Under the direction of trumpeter/composer Greg Hopkins, this concert is always a treat. Winds of the Season Tuesday, December 16 at 8:00 p.m. The Symphonic Winds is Berklees largest ensemble dedicated to the performance of contemporary classical works for winds, brass, and percussion.The program will feature the premieres of two compositions by Berklee student composers: The Quest by Joey Epstein and Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Winds by Evan Cadavieco. Also on the program will be works by Mendlelssohn, Van der Roost, and Bizet. The ensemble will be conducted by Dominick Ferrara and student conductors, Craig Robbins and Evan Cadavieco.
