Decker Much Much Much later (yes, a great leap in time with many scenes of working things out missing...) I dont think this is necessary. Decker wasnt going to stop Joshua though. He knew what it was like to be scared of yourself. Or more truthfully, the potential of losing to the monster within. Hed used the shop-vac on the little room after Joshua had fallen asleep the night before but coal dust still lingered on every surface. Just lock me in. Joshua stepped into the room. He rubbed at his nose and sneezed into the crook of his elbow. Let me out tomorrow. Im staying with you. Decker swung the door close behind him. I might hurt you. I doubt it. If Joshua were ever going to hurt him, it would have been the multiple times that Decker startled him. His martial arts training had ingrained controlled response. Joshua huddled in the corner. Scared little puppy. Decker made sure the door was bolted tight and then went to sit beside him. You shouldnt be here. Joshua curled tighter. He wasnt snarling so he wasnt angry. Decker didnt want to say I know how you feel because he didnt. His curse was different. Not better. Not worse. There was no way to compare the two. How did you become a vampire? Joshua asked. I was a diviner. A what? Someone that uses a dowsing rod to find hidden objects or someone that is divine in nature. I could find hidden things. Still can, not that I look often. Its one of the reasons I never bothered to clean up behind me. No matter how messy the house got, I could find what I wanted. According to Saul, both meanings apply. Why he believed in me so strongly. Wait – was that how you knew where the huntsman was in the park? Yes. And its how I found you that same day. I had a sense that there was something I needed if I only looked for it. Wow. Thats cool. Joshua sneezed again. It was a two edged sword. During my youth, some considered it Satins gift and I was hounded from one home to another. Luckily I could quickly regain money to replace all I lost. Then one day, the world changed, and I was caught up in it. The Wolf King took residence in New York City. Huh? How did that make you a vampire? I dont get it. It is a truth that the Grigori hate to admit. For thousands of years, while they battled all monsters, including werewolves, empires would rise and then fall into darkness as monsters would spawn at the very heart of the capitals. Babylon was just the start. Any time men gathered in numbers, breaches in the very fabric of reality would happen, as if the weight of so many souls in one place tore holes open and let in monsters. Then one day the Grigori realized that the werewolves were not settling in cities; the cities were growing up around the wolves. The Wolf Kings and his people are guard dogs. The truth was indisputable. So the Grigori made peace with the werewolves and let them multiply freely in Europe and Africa and Asia. Not here? Joshua pointed down at cellar floor, meaning United States. The Americas had not been discovered yet. As soon as the colonies were established, the Wolf King started to tap new princes to guard the new land. Boston. Philadelphia. New York. Joshua sneezed loudly. In that split second of noise, he transformed. A wolf puppy sat in his place. A very small black wolf puppy. Decker stared at it in surprise. That -- that is unexpected. The puppy whimpered in distress. Quiet at first and then growing in volume as it picked up its paws and stared at them. Hush. Hush. Youre fine. Decker scooped him up. Youre fine. Im here. I wont let anything happen to you. Youre fine. Something was very, very wrong. Decker knew that the magic didnt follow the rules of science, but it seemed inconceivable that a hundred pound plus man could become a twenty-pound puppy. But he couldnt let Joshua realize that. There. See. Youre fine. He couldnt think of any other words of comfort. He was little too freaked out to think of anything. Hush. I wont let anything happen to you. Whimpering, the puppy burrowed its head into the space between Deckers arm and his chest until his entire was tucked into Deckers armpit. Its okay. Decker petted the puppy, trying to think of something sane and reasonable to say. After several minutes of silence, he took up his story. He might as well distract Joshua with his own tale of woe. The Wolf King sent princes to the Colonies, but the wolf he sent to New York wasnt strong enough. Decker probably shouldnt mention that male or the second prince that also failed. But – for some reason – the Wolf King decided that he would come to New York City himself. It was like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Every monster in New York abandoned its lair and fled before the Wolf King. I was on the road between New York and Philadelphia, running once again from people who thought I was the devil in flesh, when a wave a real monster washed over the land. Id stopped at this inn and during the night, a vampire came in a feeding frenzy. Each person it fed on became a monster like it. It was a madness that grew like a fire, consuming everything until I was the last one alive in a small attic room. Only I wasnt like everyone else in the inn; I had my rare and magical gift. I could channel power. So when the monster tore open a hole into that monstrous realm, I could chose to shape it into a weapon or I could, for a time, close it off. I killed the vampires in that inn. God protected me in that the last had fled into a coal cellar just like this one. When the sun rose and I fell senseless, I was hidden away until night fell-- Decker paused as he realized a flaw his plan that could be catastrophic. Hed assumed that Joshua was needlessly afraid and they spend the night quietly. Or Joshua would change; they would have a massive fight, and perhaps kill each other. But he had really doubted it. He hadnt counted on Joshua changing and not being able to revert to human. This could be a problem. Joshua hadnt never seen Decker senseless. Saul had described it as very unsettling. Joshua wasnt going to be able to cope with seemingly dead Decker on top of being stuck a puppy. Enough about me. So, weve determined that yes, you can become a wolf. Lets work on getting back to being a human.
