Dee Hoham shares: Hi Autism Mothers. I need your help! My sons Speech Therapist at school insists on making eye contact a priority when working on social skills with my son. She has even told me she wants to included Will make eye contact in social situations a goal in his IEP. It is my understanding that eye contact is not only difficult for our kids but also painful and because of this, I dont want it to be a priority and I dont want it in his IEP. She insists there are studies proving eye contact can be taught to autistic children. What is your opinion on this? Am I wrong to not want her forcing eye contact? He does give ME some eye contact at home when he is relaxed but asking him to focus on social skills AND eye contact...seems like too much to ask for. Am I wrong? Please be brutally honest and thank you.
