“Deep River” Deep river, my home is over Jordan Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. Oh don’t you want to go to that gospel feast, That promised land where all is peace? Oh, deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. This song has been on my mind ever since my longtime friend and colleague Robert Sims came by for a visit. Through the years Robert has taught me much about spirituals, and this one causes me to reflect on my life, where it’s been, where it is.. and where it’s going. I am thinking of the people who have shaped my life, who have given me hope, the people who have passed, those that live, those that I never see.. and still love. I am thinking of my family and friends who struggle, who hurt, who despair.. and who still have the courage to find a better life, a better happiness, to find their “campground,” their “promised land. I am thinking about my own struggles with my past, and the “Jordan” that I had to cross to get here, just to be alive today. And I am thinking about the eventual Jordan that we must all cross, and how I wish I didn’t have to say good bye, either first, or last. I am thinking about Martin Luther King. His resonance still vibrates with us, and his message of peace still holds true. https://vimeo/116678408
