Deep brain stimulation for obsessive compulsive disorder (November - TopicsExpress

Deep brain stimulation for obsessive compulsive disorder (November 2014) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Deep brain stimulation (DBS), in which electrodes are neurosurgically implanted in the brain where they deliver targeted electrical impulses, has been tested as a treatment for incapacitating, treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A recent meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of DBS in 44 OCD patients from five small randomized trials [1]. OCD symptoms decreased in patients treated with DBS compared to patients who received sham treatment, with a magnitude comparable to the difference between moderate and severe thresholds on the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale. Thirty-six percent of patients experienced significant adverse events. The results, which suggest DBS may lead to clinically meaningful, though partial improvement in a disabled, difficult-to-treat population, need to be confirmed in larger trials. DBS is classified as an investigational device for OCD. Reference : #UpToDate ---------------------------------- #هشام_سعد_إبراهيم
