Defenders, AFSFC has recently discovered that the FBI is severely backlogged with FBI background checks. This affects all personnel who are requesting background checks for the purposes of receiving a LEOSA credential. Personal Use background checks submitted directly to the FBI will expect to take 16 to 20 weeks to return, up from 10-12 weeks advertised by the FBI. The FBI states a recent information technology system upgrade has caused the unexpected delay. For further information on the FBI process please contact them at (304) 625-5590 select option 1, then option 2, then option 9. Keep in mind, Defenders may still use a channeller to complete this process which has taken on average less than 5 days to complete compared to months. Additionally, DCS has stated these delays will not result in a forfeiture of the processing fees. All questions on status or delayed processing for background checks should be directed to the FBI.
