Delta Win CNS Swimming Tourney By Joseph Isokpehi, Benin City The fifth edition of Chief of Naval Staff Swimming Championship has ended in Oghara, Delta state, with the host state emerging champions. The open swimming championship had in attendance over seven states with host Delta emerging overall winners with 12 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze medals, while Bayelsa State came second with seven gold and three bronze medals. Civil Defence Corp finished third with five gold, five silver and two bronze medals and Edo state placed fourth with five gold, and four bronze medals with Faith Edorodion of Edo state setting a championship record at the event. NSC Coordinator for South South Mr Yemi Usikaye who represented the Sports Minister at the closing ceremony called on various state governments to provide swimming facilities as such states would be at an advantageous position to come tops at the National Sports Festival. Edo State’s coach, Poland Benazimor urged the state government to put the swimming pool at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City in good shape for hosting of subsequent competitions and better training sessions of athletes in the state. He added that the lack of facilities in the state have affected their performances at previous competitions and the most recent one, which was a three-day event organised by the Nigeria Navy in conjunction with the Nigeria Aquatic Federation.
