Department of IT, BT and S& T, Government of Karnataka Achievements (May 2013 – August 2014) 1. Free Public Wi-Fi: Bangalore is the first city in India to launch free public Wi-Fi, earlier this year at various locations. Free public Wi-Fi has been now additionally provided in MG Road, Brigade Road, Shanthinagar Bus Station, Koramangala Bus Station, Yeswanthpur Bus Station, CMH Road -100 ft. Road Junction in Bangalore; City Bus Station and Rural Bus Station in Mysore; and DC Office and Vidyagiri in Bagalkot. The free public Wi-Fi in Bagalkot has been launched on 15th August, 2014. In Bangalore alone on an average about 1,000 users have been recorded per day. The Wi-Fi facility will be shortly available in Kengeri TTMC, Satellite Bus Station – Mysore Road, Shivajinagar, Jayanagar, Banashankri and Vijaynagar. GOK has issued Expression of Interest (EoI) calling for parties interested in deployment of Wi-Fi in Bangalore and in all the District capitals. 6 companies have responded to the EoI and their evaluation is under process and there after request for proposal would be floated for selection of a service provider. This process is expected to be completed in about 4 to 6 months time. Once completed, Bangalore will become the first city in India to have complete coverage of public wifi, part of which will be free for citizens, and part will be charged for premium services.
