Depression. They said it was behind the tragic loss of Robin Williams. Perhaps his humor and comedic laughter was really just a mask he hid behind. Depression.is always lurking just below the surface ready to rear its ugly head and strike. People will say; Suck it up or Quit feeling sorry for yourself. If only it was that easy. Depression. It can come out of nowhere and hit you and you feel like it is covering you. Wave after unending wave. It can weigh a million tons. You can be doing an everyday thing like reading the newspaper and there it is. You feel it deep inside and then the tears come. First its just the went eyes but then they are rolling down your cheeks like a river. What will it be this time? A short visit like an hour or will it hang around for the day. Perhaps, if youre lucky. Then again it may be several days, a week, longer. You cant dictate how long as it decides on its own. You know it is impossible to shake off no matter how much you try. The only certainty is that it is real and it has power. It is almost tangible. You cant see it but it is real. The thoughts that it brings are not ones of comfort, joy and peace. They are darker than the night sky and they cant be chased away by the light of day. Medicine can seem to help but the pills just become another artificial mask to try and hide behind. You try to escape the thoughts but it is often like trying to run in thick, knee deep mud. Depression doesnt discriminate. It chooses its own, you dont choose it. It picks its own victims and it picks the time when it claims its victims. It claimed Robin Williams but he was just one of an unending list of others. Depression? You will never begin to know it until you live with it. Believe me, like the commercial says; Depression hurts.
