Dereks Birding, 5/8-9: Florida Lake Park. Every day is so - TopicsExpress

Dereks Birding, 5/8-9: Florida Lake Park. Every day is so different in May, which makes birding the same location day in and day out so rewarding - you really get a feel for the ebbs and flows of the seasons migration. After a strong flight on the radar Wednesday night into Thursday morning, FLP was hopping. I only had an hour (before heading south to Plum Island, MA for the day to help a friend with an event), but I quickly tallied 13 species of warblers, led by 100 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 17 Black-and-white Warblers, and 15 Black-throated Green Warblers. I also had my FOY Spotted Sandpiper (2), Nashville Warbler (2), Veery (1), Magnolia Warbler (1), Baltimore Oriole (1), and American Redstart (1). Plum Island was pretty good too! Last night, the radar started out very strong, as many birds departed the area. With winds becoming out of the east after midnight, the flight - especially at the coast - was greatly reduced. It was clear more birds departed than arrived, and that was first evident at our feeders: Our 13 well-fed Yellow-rumped Warblers had decreased to 2, and our last 4 Dark-eyed Juncos departed. Florida Lake Park was not nearly as busy, but 10 species of warblers were present, led by a mere 9 Yellow-rumped and 7 Black-and-white Warblers. However, FOYs included 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and a great view of an AMERICAN BITTERN. And, at the store, my FOY White-crowned Sparrow - spotted moments after I said to Jeannette we should see a white-crown any minute now!
