Dereks Burrrding, 1/24: Local Notes. Mostly caught up on work now after being away, it was time to catch up on the local birding - in no small part to look for somewhere to go on tomorrows birdwalk. In the past few days of walking Sasha, it is quite evident that the woods remain incredibly quiet - no finches (many goldfinches seemed to have left after the ice storm), and Golden-crowned Kinglets are few and far between. Focusing on the water today, I see that this corner of Casco Bay opened up considerably in last weeks thaw - there was plenty of open water in most of my favorite winter waterfowl spots, although waterfowl numbers were relatively low. The merganser hat trick continues at Grist Mill Park in Yarmouth, and 5 drake BARROWS GOLDENEYES continue in the Lower Harraseeket: 1 off of Winslow Park and 4 off of the Town Wharf. A nice flock of frugivores near the Harraseeket Yacht Club included 3 Eastern Bluebirds, 50+ American Robins, and about 30 Cedar Waxwings. Like finches, frugivores have been scarce this winter.
