Derrick Arden In the swing East Riding Union staged their 4 man Club Team Championship at Bridlington Links Golf Club on Sunday 4th May and 16 local clubs entered teams for this high profile competition. Many of the best amateurs from the area were involved in this stressful gross score two round medal format, when every shot counts to the team total. There was drama even before the start as one of the Driffield team had to cry off at the last moment. Fortunately Keith Gray had driven his son Ryan to the course and although he was somewhat reluctant, he was persuaded to play, a decision that was to have a significant effect on the day. The Driffield team of Sam Dillon, Ben Emsley, Ryan & Keith Gray set the early pace with scores of 80, 78, 73 & 77 respectively for a morning total of 308. That score held sway until North Cliff posted 305 with Andy Allcock on 74, Simon Boddy 75, Jake Scutt 73 & Dave Raybould 83. Other teams still in contention at the lunch break were Hull 310, Brough 311, Hornses 312, Bridlington Belvedere 313 & Hessle 314. Brough player Mark Woodall had the best round of the morning when he finished on 71. The Driffield boys out early in the afternoon again set a hot pace and improved on their morning rounds by 4 shots overall. They came in with 78,76,75 & 75 their substitute doing them proud. The morning leaders North Cliff also played well for 75,78,78 & 76 to tie with Driffield at a two round total of 612 but that meant heartache for North Cliff as for the second year running they missed out on the back 18, so congratulations and the title went to Driffield. Bridlington Belvedere made a great effort to match the leading pair and made the best team total for the afternoon with 301 that included the best individual score of the afternoon with Nick Raybould on 71 but they came up two shots shy to finish on 614. The overall best individual gross score for the two rounds was made by Mark Woodall who added a 75 to his earlier 71 for 146. Luke Robinson of Hornsea ran him close with scores of 74 & 73 for 147. Despite all the efforts of the above the individual highlight of the day belonged to Alan Key from Burstwick Country Golf who had a hole-in-one at the 166 yard 7th hole named “ The Trap” but Alan obviously avoided the dangers. Full team results; 612 Driffield & Scarborough North Cliff; 614 Bridlington Belvedere; 620 Hessle; 624 Hull; 627 Hornsea; 628 Brough; 641 Beverley; 658 Scarborough South Cliff & Boothferry; 664 Bridlington Links; 670 KP Club; 672 Burstwick & Filey; 682 Cave Castle; D/Q Hainsworth Park. North Cliff staged their May Medal on Sunday 11th May which was run concurrently with the third round of the Master Golfer Competition and also the EGU Qualifier. The weather was a mixture of showers and sunshine and for most players it was a case of on and off with the waterproofs, all making it a testing day. Jamie Boyer (4) wasn’t put off by anything and put together a fine round of level par gross for a nett 68 to claim top spot in Division one. Jamie dropped shots at the first two holes but got them back with birdies at the 4th & 5th to go out in 38. His back nine was equally impressive with a birdie at the 12th and the only blemish was a bogey at the long par 3 fifteenth hole. Glynn Hewitt (9) took second place when he finished on nett 70 and was closely followed by two nett 71’s from David Ratcliffe (8) & Malcolm Robinson (7). Division 2 honours went to Simon Smith (13) his excellent back nine, of one over par 35 gave him a nett 67, the only dropped shot came at the last. Andy Hampson (10) also carded 35 for his back nine but was two adrift on nett 69. The score of the day came in Division 3, Pete Bowman (22) played with some maturity to keep his score going steadily throughout his round, he avoided any real problems to post a great nett 62. As you would expect no one else in the division got anywhere near Pete but Michael Dugdale (19) made a good fist of it with a nett 67, a score that would have won on another day. Other sub-par scores came in from Jez Pratt (25) & Danny Cooper (17) both with nett 68’s and Alex Sheader on nett 69.The annual North Cliff charity event, The Lifeboat Mixed Pairs, was played on Saturday 10th. At the end of the day June Webster and Alan Richardson had a comfortable margin of victory of six shots. The winning couple fitted in well together to finish on nett 68.5 with a very strong pairing of Laraine Hague and Brian Witty 6 back on nett 74.5 East Riding UnionSunday the 18th May saw the ERU Team at Driffield Golf Club when they took on the Bradford Union in their season opener in the Yorkshire Inter-District League. With the loss of Paul Lockwood, Michael Helyard, Matt Killen and Joe Coyle to the paid ranks and with seasoned campaigners like Alan Wright (Hessle) and Neil Burnley (Beverley) sidelined through injury Team Captain/Manager Andy Woodhead (Brough) was looking to experienced players such as Andy Lockwood (Hessle), Steve Pybus (Scarborough North Cliff) to step up to the plate and set an example to the new look team. Sponsors KC, after the disappointment of the FA Cup Final result, will have been pleased to see their support rewarded on this occasion with a fantastic win for the ERU. The win featured a great fight back after Bradford took the initiative in the morning foursomes winning four matches to two and lead by 8 points to 4. Steve Pybus & Simon Boddy from North Cliff claiming one of the ERU wins and Lewis Blanchard (Hessle) & Sam Dillon (Driffield) the other. Fortunes were reversed in the afternoon singles when the local team took 5 of the first six matches to lead 14-10. Bradford then fought back with 2 wins and 2 halves to put the match in the balance at 16 points each. Ryan Gray (Driffield), one of last years juniors, made home knowledge count accounting for his opponent by 4 and 2. That left Team Captain Andy Woodhead out on the course and all square after 16 holes, he won the 17th and kept his nerve to close out the match at the 18th to give the ERU victory by 20 points to 16. A great match with 8 of the singles decided on the 18th and an exciting finale that hopefully sets up the ERU players for a successful season. Ian Stephenson, a 3 Handicap Member at Ganton Golf Club, shot 75 to win the East Riding Union Seniors Championship at Burstwick Country Golf Club by 2 shots from Barry Peasgood (Hornsea). Ian started his round with 6 straight pars before dropping shots at the 7th and 9th holes but was cruising along at 2 over par until he came to grief at the short par 4 11th hole (323 yards) where he missed the green and ended up in the water hazard. He elected to play his third shot from inside the pond but his attempted recovery shot ended out of bounds and he ended up carding an eight. Championships are won by keeping your nerve and Ian demonstrated that by clearing his mind of what had happened and concentrated on the holes ahead, as a result he made par at 12 & 13, birdied the par 3 14th then finished with four more pars to post the winning score of gross 75Ian to reclaim the trophy he previously won in 2012. De Vere sponsored North Region Championship. Belt who is now attached to the Snainton Golf Centre and is sponsored by De Vere shot a first round four under par 68 to establish a one shot lead over the field of 120 players. In round two, whilst a number of players recorded sub-seventy scores to close on Belt, he resisted all challenges and with a round of 70 for a six under par total of 138 picked up the prestigious trophy for the second time in eight years. Early in his second round victory looked to be a matter of course when he moved to nine under par after ten holes courtesy of an eagle at the second and a trio of birdies but a wobble on the back nine saw him give three shots back to the course. Belts win earns him a useful cheque for £2500 and sees him established at the top of the North Region Order of Merit table with 270 points. Commenting on his win Belt said, “This could kick start my season. When the bigger occasions arise I can take with me the experience of how to handle most situations and I had a couple of those today. My back nine was a bit ugly and I started to drop a few shots but I just got on with the job. Overall I did not play that well but I holed a few putts and thats been the key to my success lately”. Speaking about the year ahead Belt, who will be competing mainly on the Europro Tour said, “I also like to mix and match playing in regional and Yorkshire events because I have to earn a living. I may also get a few invitations to play the Challenge Tour. My ultimate aim is the European Tour and I feel Im going in the right direction especially with the support team I have around me”. Two other East Riding players survived the cut which came at one over par after round one with fifty players advancing. The K.P. Clubs Carlo Cuillo finished tied 17th on 143 (73/70) and Hulls Blake Ellison tied 27th on 145 (73/72). Matt Daley (Hainsworth Park), John Wells (Snainton) and Alex Boyton (Skidby Lakes) all shot scores of 75 to miss the cut. Picture attached of Alex with the Northern Region Trophy. Ganton Golf Club now has two new champions on their books. Firstly Carolyn Kirk took the 2014 Yorkshire Veterans Championship Title having won the title at Bedale Golf Club. After making it through the strokeplay qualification section she then battled through four rounds of matchplay. Battles they certainly were, for in the semi-finals it took Kirk twenty one holes to get the better of Julie Wheldon (Wakefield) before beating former Yorkshire County player Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield) by two holes in the final. Ian Stephenson won the East Riding Union Seniors Title at Burstwick Country Golf last Friday beating off the challenge from a field of 60 players. EDITORS NOTE SEE ABOVE REPORT. Scarborough North Cliffs three man team gained promotion to the Y.U.G.C. 5th Division last week when they finished amongst the top six teams at Forest Park Golf Club in the 6th Division Team Championship. North Cliffs team of Steve Pybus, Simon Boddy and Jake Scutt returned a total score of 464 for 36 holes with all scores to count. Pybus produced the best individual second round score of 70. Bridlington represented by Ryan Rawson, Tim Moore and Nick Raybould scored 466 and retained their 6th Division status. Filey were relegated to Division 7. North Cliff held a medal stroke play competition on Sunday with well over a hundred members competing for various awards. In Division 1 three players finished with scores of nett 70, after the count back John Collins (6) took top spot with a back 9 of 36 after a strong finish, Kristian Wright (8) was placed second with 37 and Craig Swales (6)third on 40. Craig had a game of two halves going out in a magnificent two under par gross 36 but then could only manage a 6 over 40 on the back stretch. Neil Upson (14) in Division 2 produced the best score of the day when he carded a nett 66 to take The Lifeboat Medal and win the division by 4 shots from closest challenger Steve Watts (16) on nett 70. Division 3 honours went to Graham Pickup (18) who played consistently throughout his round to card a nett 69 and also claim The Alan Mann Trophy for the best score from a player over 55 years old. Lee Pickup (19) but no relation and Darren Bunyan (20) ran him close with sub-par rounds of nett 71. The North Cliff Mid-week medal on Wednesday was also stroke play format and the three divisions were keenly contested. The up and coming Michael Patterson (7) did just enough to win Division 1 courtesy of a nett score of 68, he will now be playing off a 6 handicap. Glynn Hewitt (9) finished in second spot one shot adrift on nett 69 and one shot further back was James Blenkinsopp (5) who had the consolation of matching Michael for the best gross score of 75. Division 2 was won by Luca Masucci (10) who posted a nett 68, one shot better than Simon Monsey (11), Tom Rollonson (10) & Mike Tighe (15) also had good sub-par rounds of nett 71. Another nett 68 claimed the Division 3 with Alex Sheader (18) just holding off Rich Ward (21) on nett 69 and Dave Bevan (18) with nett 70. South Cliff had a busy weekend with two Trophy competitions, firstly on Saturday The Allatt Trophy, a Rabbit’s Stableford competition, was contested with the Trophy going to the highest points score from a player with a 16 or higher handicap. There was also an associate prize on offer for the scratch to 15 handicap players. After the disappointment of defeat for his beloved York City, Martin Woof bounced back by taking the Trophy with total of36 points, he beat Mick Mangan by just one point and was last seen sporting a big grin. Martin’s round included 5 Pars and he was going very well until he carded a 7 at the difficult 16th. However a strong par, par finish earned him the victory whilst Mick was left to rue the three no returns he had at the 2nd, 11th and 17th holes. The associate prize went to Shaun Smith playing off 1 handicap. A costly 5 at the short par 3 third was overcome with birdies at 5, 6 and 9 to go out in 1 under par gross for 20 points. He dropped shots at 10 and 11 but a birdie at 12 put him back on track for 17 points on the back 9 for a total of 37 points. In second place it was Dave Hall who is finding some form lately also with 37 points but lost out on the back 9. His double bogeys at 10 and 16 certainly cost him this time. On Sunday they played for The Dockray Trophy, the competition format was a greensome with a draw for partners. Great trust is put in your partner’s game and certainly Glenn Broadbent (13) and Marcus Eaton (20) gelled together well to produce an excellent gross 80 nett 64.2 to win by 3.4 shots from Carl Baldwin and that man with the grin Martin Woof. The winners birdied the first and fourth to get their card off to a brilliant start. It was a double celebration for Glenn Broadbent as earlier in the week Glenn and Andy Newsome representing the Club in the Daily mail Foursomes won their 2nd knockout match away at Flamborough at the first extra hole. Congratulations to them boys and good luck in the next round which includes clubs from further afield. Ladies Golf ResultsThe South Cliff Medal 3 took place on Tuesday 6th May.
