Desionomics! For a long time I wanted to buy a decent looking table lamp for myself. Whenever I had an opportunity, I used to visit shops nearby to home and check out the options. I was not satisfied with what I saw. Recently, I got an opportunity to visit BVK Iyengar road for some other work and I happened to see many shops selling lamps, shades and all things electrical. I knew I would be able to find a good looking table lamp for myself and went into a shop selling lamps, lamp shades, chandeliers and all that stuff. I told the sales person I was looking for a table lamp. He said they have a huge collection on the fourth floor and and he took me by elevator to the fourth floor. He showed me all types of lamps. I was interested in one of them but it was slightly bigger for my table and asked for a smaller version. He said it is available in the third floor and went and stood near the elevator. I told him we could walk down the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator to come up all the way from ground floor. He said, that all three flights of stairs are used to store inventory and the only way is to use the elevator up and down! I asked him why they can’t clear the staircases and instead save on expensive power bills to run the elevator. He said they save a lot on rental by using the staircase as storage. It is cheaper for them to run the elevator. Hmmm…I did a mental calculation and what he said is true! They pay on average rental of Rs. 100 per sqarefoot per month (It could be much more than that). Each flight of stairs including the vertical is about 60 Square feet and multiply that by 3 flights of stairs; it is about 180 square feet the rental for this space is about Rs. 18000 per month. His power bill probably Rs. 10000. And moreover customers get to ride by an elevator! Smart. Very smart. Chidananda Rupah Shivoham Shivoham Phanibhushan Sharma
