Despite feeling so lethargic, I cant sleep. Im extremely nervous about today. It will be the first time that I ever attend a book fair as an author as opposed to a reader. Ive been attending and working as a volunteer in book fairs for years. Id always go and listen to authors telling us their stories, sharing with us their journeys and so on and so forth. Now Ill be the one taking other people through my oddysey. I spent years reading Mark Gevissers books, and now Im actually going to be sharing a panel with him, discussing our respective submissions, debating issues on an equal footing. I dont think 3 years ago when I was a teenager, I ever really imagined that Id one day be sitting in a hotel in Rosebank looking at a programme that has my name on it, and introducing me as Malaika Wa Azania, author of ....... . I mean, I was just a girl in Soweto, volunteering at Khanya College and with no idea what I was going to do with my life. And here we are now, moving forward. Im feeling so emotional, my people. Im allowed to sit here alone and cry silently, right? Surely Im allowed!
