Despite my predilection for writing, Ive hardly expanded my horizons beyond the simple, in-text MLA citation. I am currently writing my political science term paper, for which there is no rubric or explicitly required style. Beyond the length of the paper, the spacing and margins, the only other expressed requirement on the syllabus is the vague expectation that we properly use footnotes. On the first day of class, my professor went on a passionate rant about how many college students have never utilized footnotes in a paper, a category in which I can be counted. After some time spent surfing various websites, I think Ive come to the understanding the footnotes are just an alternative to parenthetical in-text citation. Am I oversimplifying it? Am I missing something? Doesnt APA require parenthetical citation? If so, the style would be MLA by default when footnotes are required (as opposed to endnotes)...if anyone can provide some insight, I would be very grateful.
