Destroyers, Last week we congratulated Maryam Mirzakhani for becoming the first woman to win the Fields Medal, the highest prize in mathematics. But just because she is the first woman to receive the award, doesnt mean there arent equally deserving women who have gone before her. After receiving her award, the Iranian professor stated she would be “happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians.” While that will no doubt be the case, the fact it has taken this long for a woman to win the ‘Nobel Prize of Mathematics’ does not mean women have been lacking passion and ability in these fields.
