Detailed Report on 72 hours strike from tomorrow onwards DarjeelingTimes - Darjeeling News 2 hours ago GJM calls 72-hour bandh To mark new phase of statehood agitation The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leadership today declared a 72 hour strike across the GTA from July 29 to mark the beginning of a new movement for Gorkhaland while discarding the existing GTA administration. The abrupt decision was taken by GJM chief Bimal Gurung in the evening after holding discussions with the party’s central committee, makuhuma samiti, youth, women and student members in Kalimpong. Gurung said the strike would be applicable in the entire GTA jurisdiction where party members will take out processions to announce the renewed statehood movement. The GJM chief also hinted of resigning from the GTA and starting the movement afresh. He said a few tasks need to be concluded after which he would step down from the GTA chair. “We will follow the Gandhian principle in our movement but the state might want to play rough,” he remarked, while appealing to all stakeholders to stand together for the cause of Gorkhaland. Gurung further said the government has tricked the Hills with the GTA. He accused the state government to obstructing the GTA in its efforts at developing the hills. “We have our hands tied because when we tried to amend GTA rules, the government intervenes and rejects them,” he claimed. During the course of the meeting that lasted for nearly four hours, it was decided all government and non-government offices, institutions and business establishments will remain closed and no vehicles will ply for 72 hours beginning July 29.
