Developing Altamont’s Future’s All Committee Meeting, Nov. 14, 2013 Developing Altamont’s Future recently held an all committee meeting. Gisele Hamm and Linda Lee Blaine, Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs, who conducted last year’s MAPPING the future of Altamont sessions presented success stories of other communities. Gisele suggested that the group use social media and have a web presence. Everyone is encouraged to like the Developing Altamont’s Future Facebook page. Altamont should apply for the Hometown Award. They showed a video of one man who saw the need for changes in his community and took action to make positive changes. Dan Whitney reported the I-70 Committee is working to make the Altamont exit more attractive. They hope to improve lighting at the exit, develop a signage plan on and off the interstate, and continue to work with IDOT on upkeep. James Lurkins reported the Parks and Recreation Committee had monthly workdays. Volunteers cleaned up and painted at Gilbert and Schmidt Park. They plan to make other additions to the parks. Rodney and Carrie Schultz, members of the former P.A.R.K.S. Group reported that they will be setting up the Ho Ho Land Christmas lights in Schmidt Park. They invited Developing Altamont’s Future to help. They need volunteer greeters at the park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Mayor Taylor reported the National Road Kiosk with photos and facts showing the history of Altamont will be placed at the entrance to Gilbert Park. Carol Tillman added a sign is attached to the timber from the National Road. It is located in Schmidt Park. Tiffany Kline, a member of the Economic and Development Committee, said their committee is available to help all Altamont businesses. They can assist with a marketing plan to promote Altamont to businesses looking for a location. They have been in contact with companies that are considering Altamont for a location. The committee plans to host an Altamont Business Expo showcasing local businesses. Mayor Taylor added that the city’s business incubator has space available at low rent for new businesses. Linda Schmidt showed the new Altamont map/brochure. The Family Friendly Committee worked with The Altamont News to produce a map featuring ads and location of Altamont businesses plus information and photos of parks, schools, attractions, and churches. These brochures met the guidelines and are available to travelers at Illinois Tourist Information Centers on I-70 and I-57. The committee updated the Altamont Business List that is available in print and at altamontil.net. They compiled the “Altamont Celebrates Christmas 2013” list of events. Welcome to Altamont Bags are available to new residents. The committee is planning the second German Heritage Day on the first Saturday in June, 2014. Developing Altamont’s Future welcomes new members and volunteers.
