Development of root system of basmati variety pb no. 3 plants grown with DSR 1st, SRI in between , and 3rd normal planting . The reason behind this is that SRI cultivation method appears to result in better nutrient access and/or uptake by the rice plants. The higher nutrient uptake is attributable to greater root growth and penetration in the soil sub-surface (higher root length density below 30 cm in depth), thus enabling the plant to exploit a greater volume of soil in comparison to that of plants grown with conventional methods. It is also very likely that the flooding and draining results in faster mineralization of soil organic matter which results in a greater supply of nutrients relative to conventional rice management.
