Developments in the use of renewable solar energy have increased the need for solar radiation measurements on a global scale. These measurements are essential for region- or site-specific solar resource assessment, for the monitoring of solar power plants, and also for some short-term forecasting, for example for electricity grid integration. Establishing the viability of infrastructure at new locations and at different time scales also requires reliable continuous measurements. SPN1, a state-of-the-art radiation measurement tool, is studied in this open access paper in the journal Atmospheric Measurement Techniques.
