Devotion - December 30, 2014 Daily devotion from Colossians 3:12. See series: Devotions Devotion - December 30, 2014 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 “Who am I?” That is one of life’s most basic, yet important questions. It is only three short words, yet it is not so simple to answer. Philosophers and great thinkers of the world have spent much time and filled many pages in trying to answer that question adequately. “Who am I?” We spend much of our lives trying to answer that question for ourselves. It’s amazing how many ways we try to come up with an answer that makes us feel better about who we are. We define ourselves by our achievements. We define ourselves by our sports trophies or antique collections or by the number of grandchildren we have. We try to answer the question of who we are by identifying ourselves as the successful business leader, the good athlete, or the loving grandparent. But that doesn’t always work, does it? What happens when the business isn’t so successful or we go a few tournaments without a trophy or our grandchildren get older and don’t come around as much anymore? Then, in place of pride, we find despair. We begin to identify ourselves as the loser or the loner or as the one who really has no reason for getting up in the morning. “Who am I?” The Bible has the only correct answer to that question. It tells me that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. It tells me that in Christ Jesus I have become somebody special to God. Paul writes to the Colossians: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved…” Who am I? I am somebody chosen by God to be saved out of this horribly sinful world. I am somebody that is dearly loved by God—so much so that he willingly sacrificed his own Son to make me his own. Paul also says in this verse that I am holy. That is how God sees me right now through faith in Jesus. “Who am I?” The best and only correct answer to that question is found in Christ Jesus. I am a holy child of God. I am chosen and dearly loved. We now can move on from such a basic question, and live our lives as the chosen ones of God: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for choosing me. Thank you for loving me so dearly in Christ Jesus. Help me never to question who I am, but rather, give me strength to live for you. Amen.
