Devotional for March 9 2014 “Trust” Then the LORD said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan. – Joshua 5:9-12 I would venture to guess that many of you watched at least some of the Winter Olympics while they were being televised. I, too, watched some of them and was amazed by the skills of the athletes in various sports. I was particularly impressed by the snow boarders and the tricks that they did on the halfpipe. The slalom skiers who raced down the snowy mountains also amazed me. However, there is another group of skiers which we did not see who impress me even more. They were mentioned publicly in a television special several years ago. As incredible as the athletes in the Winter Olympics are, these athletes are even more incredible. The television special featured blind skiers being trained for slalom skiing, impossible as that sounds. Paired with sighted skiers, the blind skiers were taught on the flats how to make right and left turns. When that was mastered, they were taken to the slalom slope, where their sighted partners skied beside them shouting, Left! and Right! As they obeyed the commands, they were able to negotiate the course and cross the finish line, depending solely on the sighted skiers’ word. It was either complete trust or catastrophe. Are we able to trust God as much as these blind skiers are able to trust their sighted guide? Often times, we find ourselves at the top of the mountain, getting ready to head down the slope, to begin a new phase of our life. How do we respond? Do we trust God enough to begin something new in us? God had led the Israelites out of Egypt and had brought them to the land He had promised long before. For forty years, God had provided manna for them to eat. Now they come to the time when the crops have produced in the Promised Land. After they had enjoyed their first meal from the land, the manna was no longer needed and did not appear the next day. Can we trust God enough to know that if He brings one chapter of our life to a close that He will begin writing a new chapter and make the provisions we need? I have no doubt that He wants to do something significant in our midst, through us, and perhaps even in us. Are we willing to trust Him, listen for His voice, and go in the direction He is leading? Our ability to trust and listen will determine how much we accomplish in the days ahead and how well we complete the course He has set before us. Father, teach me to trust you when I come to the start of a new place. Help me have ears to hear your voice. AMEN.
