Dexter was neutered Monday. The surgery went very well and he is suffering through another recovery in his crate. Fortunately I found a new and interesting chew toy - a bull horn - that he enjoys. His chew toy collection keeps growing - antlers, knuckle bones, marrow bones (stuffed and unstuffed), Kongs, cheek rolls, bully sticks, buffalo hide, cow ears, sow ears, chewpie chews, and now a bull horn. His teeth look great from all the chewing! Hes spent as much time recuperating in his crate as he has out free in the house. The result is an adolescent Dane with a lot of pent up energy. He is tired of not being able to play with the other dogs or going for long walks. Dexter is ready for adoption. He is not a good candidate for a first time Dane owner. Dexter is a diamond in the rough....and at the moment hes more rough than sparkly. I suggest that adopters screen potential trainers and find one that uses positive reinforcement and that the adopter focus on leadership & relationship building while expecting 3-6 months of consistent training. Dexter is a sweet boy, but he doesnt pick up on cues quickly - he takes patience. He does want to please and do whats expected, but figuring out what that looks like it a bit challenging for the boy.
