~ Dhurpad~ Hindustani classical music today exists in a number of genres. The main ones are dhrupad, dhamar, dadra khayal, tappa, tarana and thumri . The dhrupad form is the strictest and most rigid whilst the thumri is one of the most flexible and open forms. We shall now briefly look at each of the above mentioned genres. Dhrupad The dhrupad is the oldest genre of Hindustani classical music. dhrupad has evolved through the ages in various locations, from temples to courts. The modern concert version of the genre is largely the one that developed in the temples. dhrupad is the strictest genre which allows little scope for improvisation in the structure and presentation of a raga. A dhrupad performance will always have two main sections, the alap which is the exposition section and the bandish which is the fixed composition. dhrupad exists both in vocal as well as instrumental forms, although the latter is rarely seen these days. The text of the vocal variety of dhrupad is based on philosophy, devotion and dedication to the Gods. It follows a very systematic arrangement of notes. This approach extends to its handling of the ragas where it systematically explores various aspects of the raga. The dhrupad requires high level of concentration from the performer and is a sombre and serious form. As a result it is less popular than some of the other genres.
