Diamond Buying TIP! Diamonds are sold by weight & prices are per carat. Educate yourself on what the diameter of the diamond you are buying should be. For example, a one carat round diamond typically measures 6.5mm. If the diamond you are considering weighs 1.0ct but measures 6.0mm then you are paying for 1ct but receiving a stone that appears closer to 0.75ct! So is buying a stone that measures more than expected better because you are paying for something that looks bigger than it is? BEWARE! Spready stones arent necessarily a good buy! True a shallow stone looks larger, but they tend to lack the brilliance (aka sparkle) of a well cut diamond. The less than ideal cut results in light leaking out the bottom rather than being reflected back to the eye. If the price sounds too good to be true it probably is, there is ALWAYS a reason for a deep discount on a diamond. Consult with an unbiased expert BEFORE you buy.
