Did You Know: This day (July 16) in 1969, marked the first moon mission in U.S. history, with the launch of Apollo 11 from Cape Canaveral, Fla. On July 20, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin left the command module and took off in the lunar module Eagle — landing on southwestern edge of the Sea of Tranquility. At 10:56 pm EDT, Armstrong made history, becoming the first human to walk on the surface of the moon, and uttering the now famous phrase: Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, according to HISTORY (Learn more: bit.ly/AT_FBDYK071614) Over the years a variety of items related to this historic event have come to market through auctions, including: A U.S. Flag carried on the moon by Armstrong, along with an Apollo 11 patch, all mounted on a wooden display, sold for $56,762 in 2007; a lot including an Apollo 11 Lunar Module flown LM activation checklist page with handwritten notations by Neil Armstrong, originally from the personal collection of mission lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, fetched $55,268 during an April 2013 auction; and a Neil Armstrong autograph quote signed beneath mounted sheet of First Man on the Moon stamps, with a typed and signed letter, sold for $38, 837 during a Nov. 2, 2012 auction. *All auctions listed here were presented by Heritage Auctions.
