Did you know Abraham Lincoln, Beethoven, Van Gogh, James Taylor, Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Michael Phelps, Charles Dickens, Buzz Aldrin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ricky Williams, Ted Turner, Eric Clapton and Winston Churchill all suffered or suffer from a mental illness? Think of all the greatness that came from just these few that I mentioned. There are hundreds more just like them. And yet, they suffered. Its very frustrating when people only see the faults in others and none of the good. I fully understand how difficult it can be. My son struggles with a mental illness. He talks way too much, he can be quite annoying and he makes a TON of mistakes. You wont find any Facebook posts about how amazing he is with winning awards at school or on teams or in the community because he struggles with these things. But he IS amazing. He has a great capacity to love people, hes very sensitive and complimentary and hes working hard toward his Eagle in Scouting. I cant imagine what it is like to live inside his brain that doesnt work like most others. So on this very last day of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am asking for a little more patience, a little more tolerance, a little more love for those with mental illness. You never know what greatness is working inside of them if they are just given the chance.
