Did you know Arkansas Childrens Hospital admits more than one child a week for ATV-related injuries? In fact, deaths and injuries related to ATV popularity are all too common. Lacye Vance from the ACH Injury Prevention Center explained how to avoid injuries. Please SHARE these tips to keep your kids (and all loved ones) safe. • The American Academy of Pediatrics’ position is that no one under age 16 ride or operate an ATV. • Safety risks increase as operator age decreases; youth under 16 have 2.5 times greater risk of ATV injury than those age 16-34. • Riders should only operate ATVs that are appropriate for their size: o ATVs with engine sizes over 90 cubic centimeters (cc) can go over 70 mph and weigh hundreds of pounds. Current industry and CPSC recommendations are for children and young teens to be restricted to ATVs with engine sizes of 90 cc or below. • Know your TRIPSS: o Training – complete an ATV rider course o Ride off road o Impairment – never operate an ATV impaired o Plan ahead – scope out your path and ensure its free of wire fencing, tree stumps, etc o Single rider o Safety equipment – gloves, closed toed shoes, helmet, etc
