Did you know... Perception of Orléans has not kept up to reality. Times change and perceptions have to follow. Just 100 years ago, Ottawa’s total population was only 75,000. The Glebe was a suburb on the fringe of the city. •In 1991, Orléans had a population of 70,000. •By 2012, the population had increased by almost 60% to 111,000 & continues to grow by just under 2,000 a year. •Other areas of the city are considered growth areas, but •Population, 2012: o Orléans: 111,000 o Kanata: 80,500 o South Nepean: 76,300 • Even if you add Stittsville to the west and Riverside South & Leitrim to the south: o Kanata/Stittsville 108,050 o South Nepean/Riverside South/Leitrim: 94,600 o Orléans is still larger o But if we add the others, we should add Blackburn Hamlet to Orléans: 120,000 (the size of Kingston) At current growth rates, the west and south may catch up to Orléans 20 years from now – maybe not. Combine Orléans population base, with a low unemployment rate and an aggregate family income of some $5 billion a year – scope for all types of businesses, services, and entertainment. It takes time for that change to take hold - but there are plenty of examples that it is happening. This information was compiled by Brian Hunter (former Chief Economist at CIDA, and he also spent over 35 years at the Federal Department of Finance and World Bank), using various official statistical reports. We are fortunate to have Brian as one of our very dedicated volunteers on our Economic Development Committee. He is also an active member on the Greater Orléans Economic Development Council.
