Did you know that Chipotle contracted with an overseas vendor for their grassfed beef supplies? So while you worried about your carbon foot print and eating local, perhaps Chipotle isnt the answer after all. This chain has carved its niche by propaganda. I have nothing against local, all natural, certified organic as a niche industry that caters to a demographic that can afford to make those choices. (Choices might I add that are not always sustainable, environmentally friendly, efficient, or any more nutritious.) But to backhand production agriculture and scaremonger consumers into believing your pseudo-science just to grow your bottom line, is this ethical behavior? Here are a few FACTS to start your morning: - All cattle are born on farms and fed primarily grass for the majority of their life. - Grassfed cattle operations are a niche market that typically have to occur in places with year round pastures. They generally sell at a 25% premium (sometimes higher) in the market place. - Grassfed cattle are kept alive much longer to reach finishing, which reduces the efficiency and increases their carbon footprint. Most people dont realize the harmonious efficiency created in transportation, crop production and the cattle industry. - Grassfed, all natural and organic are labeling programs that receive a certification when a rancher produces the animal a certain way. They have not yet been found to have significant health differences. - Antibiotics are given to animals in these herds. We as farmers have the responsibility to care for the animals in our charge. These animals are simply marketed differently. - 3oz of cabbage has 2700 nanograms of estrogen. 3oz of grassfed beef has 1.3, 3oz of conventional beef has 1.9. - MRSA exist is a hospital environment. Not one person has ever contracted an antibiotic resistant bacteria from exposure to beef or cattle. - There are segments in the beef industry that produce a nutritionally different product, Japaense Kobe or Akaushi for example. This breed of beef produces a portion that has less cholesterol than fish AND is the only animal protein that contains Oleic acic. Dont believe because I wrote it, anymore than you believe anything else you read on the internet. Go research it for yourself and make informed decisions for your family. BUT REMEMBER: That how you spend your money is voting within the market place. I have flatly refused to step foot in a Chipotle since May 2008. I have now added Panera to that list. NOT BECAUSE THEY CHOOSE ALL NATURAL--- BUT BECAUSE THEY CHOOSE TO MISINFORM. This is my choice, how are dollars voting for you?
