He was in the line-up as Spain faced Argentina in B6 during the first game staged at Villa Park during the 1966 World Cup. Argentina won the match 2-1 in front of a crowd of 47,982 on July 13. Luis Artime - nicknamed El Hermosa or The Handsome One - bagged both goals with José Martínez Sánchez - nicknamed Pirri - hitting the solitary goal for Spain. The second match played in B6 during the tournament saw Argentina draw 0-0 with West Germany - eventual runners-up of course - in front of 51,419 on July 16. This will go down in World Cup history as one of the most bruising encounters ever witnessed.
