Did you know that Mission has one of the youngest populations in Canada? The average age is approximately 36. Why is this important? Mission is a bedroom community. The majority of Mission residents travel out of town to work. Mission is close enough to metro Vancouver that young families find it affordable and attractive to live here and commute out of town for work. Mission is a desirable location for young families to start off. Elderly community members are leaving Mission due to lack of suitable housing. Retiree’s and senior/old-aged community members looking to downsize and move into suitable housing options are leaving Mission. This generation typically looks for rancher style housing and condo’s. Supply of this type of Real Estate is not sufficient in our community. Mission has one of the smallest percentages of this type of housing in the lower mainland. How do we create a more diverse population? Offer local high paying jobs. Attract higher paying jobs/businesses into our community. Change the perception, change our town. There is a lot of potential in the Lougheed Corridor for investors to see that our town is a successful option for their business. Perception is one of the most important aspects of a community. What you perceive is what you believe. Provide affordable and diverse housing options. Over the past 10 years in the District of Mission focus has been on constructing one style of home: basement entry spec homes on small lots. Moving forwards, I believe it’s imperative that we look to offer developers incentives to construct high quality condos and rancher-style housing in suitable areas. Condos provide an easy and economical option for retirees and others. Rancher style homes offer the older population new, trendy Real Estate options where they can live comfortably and downsize.
