Did you know that afternoon teas have been around since early in the nineteenth century? Its all down to Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, who got a bit peckish and couldnt wait till 8 or 9 pm for dinner. She would order tea, bread and butter and cakes to be served mid afternoon. This soon became a social event for friends and developed into the at home. It didnt take long for such a good idea to cross social boundaries and Tea Rooms soon sprang up in great numbers allowing all to enjoy the treat. Afternoon tea is now regarded as a quintessentially English tradition. Long may it continue.
